<image:title>Blogs - The Importance of Spaces: How To Properly Design a Sleep-Oriented Room</image:title>
<image:caption>Beyond mental benefits, other sensory factors like lighting, noise, and temperature also play a crucial role in sleep optimization. Kim et al. (2010) emphasize the importance of blocking unwanted light, as any light exposure stimulates brain activity. In addition, since your body naturally cools when sleeping, maintaining your room temperature at 17-28°C (63-82°F) is quite effective, as explained by Van Someren et al. (2006). Even more interestingly, Caddick et al. (2018) identified key parameters for ideal sleep environments. These include maintaining a humidity level between 40-60%, noise levels below 35 dB, and complete darkness, in addition to regulating temperature within the recommended range. Carefully considering and applying these factors can significantly enhance sleep quality.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Can You Sleep Too Much? A Guide to Oversleeping - Why Do You Feel More Tired After Sleeping In?</image:title>
<image:caption>The grogginess you feel after oversleeping, often called "sleep inertia," occurs because your body’s internal clock (circadian rhythm) thrives on consistency. When you sleep longer than usual, especially past your regular wake-up time, your circadian rhythm becomes misaligned, leading to feelings of fatigue (Jewett et al., 1999). Essentially, your body becomes confused, making it harder to feel alert and refreshed. Additionally, extended sleep can sometimes push you into deeper stages of sleep at a time when you’d normally be awake, causing you to wake up during slow-wave or REM sleep. This disrupts the natural progression of your sleep cycles and leaves you feeling groggy (Van Dongen et al., 2003).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Sleeping Habits Around the World</image:title>
<image:caption>Have you ever had a sleepover with a friend just to realize how different their sleep routine is? Some play music to fall asleep, others want complete silence. Some keep the lights on, others require total darkness. These subtle variations represent diverse ways of sleeping. On a higher level, bedtime rituals can vary significantly across different countries. As compared to other daytime activities like studying or eating, the cultural differences in sleep are not as easily observed. In this post, we hope to broaden your horizons by introducing some unique ways people are sleeping around the globe.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Sleeping Habits Around the World - Inemuri in Japan</image:title>
<image:caption>Inemuri is the Japanese practice of sleeping at work. Japanese workers can doze off pretty much everywhere, from a meeting at their desks to on the trains. This unique sleeping practice can only be found in this country and is commonly seen as a sign of hard work. Inemuri, translated to “sleeping whilst present” in English, implies that the workers are not in a deep sleep but can rather wake up and immediately continue their tasks. As mentioned above, since people in Japan are getting so little sleep at home, inemuri helps them to compensate for the missed time sleeping. However, inemuri is not the proper way of letting the body rest after a long day of work. Long-term sleep deprivation will have very long-term implications for our bodies and minds. (For more information, read Inemuri – The Japanese Art Of Sleeping At Work)</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Sleeping Pills are NOT the Answer</image:title>
<image:caption>Tossing and turning at night, desperately trying to fall asleep, you look at the clock, and it’s already 2 AM. You know you have to wake up at 7 a.m. It's a familiar battle that many of us can relate to, longing for the great feeling of sleep after a long day. In these moments, the use of sleeping pills can be tempting. They promise to bring you into a realm of seemingly restful sleep. But before you start utilizing them, it's time to look at the truth behind these “magic” pills.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Today on REM Reward, we’re joined by Angela Goldman, a board-certified health and wellness coach and founder of NRG Health and Wellness. Angela works with clients both one-on-one and in group settings to help people improve their health through sustainable habits around sleep, nutrition, stress management, and lifestyle rhythms. She has taught her “Sleep Rescue” workshop across New Jersey and also leads health and wellness programs focused on improving energy, resilience, and long-term vitality. In this episode we talk about why sleep is often the keystone habit that unlocks progress in nutrition, emotional regulation, and energy, how food choices and timing influence sleep quality, and practical strategies for building habits that actually last. We also discuss common myths around sleep and wellness and simple changes students and families can make to start improving their health right away.</image:caption>

<image:title>Podcasts - The Power of Light: Circadian Rhythms, Sleep Inertia & Better Mornings – EP 29 w/ Dr. Helen Burgess</image:title>
<image:caption>Today on REM Reward, we are joined by Dr. Helen Burgess, a circadian rhythm researcher and professor at the University of Michigan. She is the Richard Tam Bipolar and Circadian Research Professor and co-director of the Sleep and Circadian Research Laboratory, where her work focuses on how our internal body clocks regulate sleep, mood, and mental health. In this episode we talk about how the circadian system predicts daily changes in light and activity, why morning sunlight plays such a powerful role in waking us up, and what causes sleep inertia — that groggy feeling after waking. We also discuss caffeine, alcohol, exercise, and practical habits that can help people wake up feeling more alert and aligned with their biological clock.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Erik Herzog, PhD, is a Professor of Biology at Washington University in St. Louis and the principal investigator of the Herzog Lab. His research focuses on the brain’s circadian circuits and how biological clocks regulate behavior, brain function, and disease. Dr. Herzog is also involved with the Hope Center’s Clocks & Sleep Club, where researchers examine how disruptions to circadian rhythms are linked to conditions such as cancer, neurodegenerative disease, and cognitive decline. His work bridges basic neuroscience and real-world health applications, with the goal of understanding how timing in the body influences long-term well-being.</image:caption>

<image:title>Podcasts - From Insomnia to Inspiration: Behind the Stories of Sleep With Me - EP 13 w/ Drew Ackerman</image:title>
<image:caption>Drew Ackerman is the creator and host of Sleep With Me, the one-of-a-kind bedtime story podcast featured in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Buzzfeed, Mental Floss, and Dr. Oz. Born out of Drew's childhood insomnia, Sleep With Me was inspired by late-night comedy radio, which was the only thing that helped him fall asleep. Created in 2013, Sleep With Me combines the pain of insomnia with the relief of laughing and turns it into a unique storytelling podcast. Drew's stories on the show are inspired by his childhood as the oldest of six children and past jobs as a fuzzy dice and iron-on patch salesperson, fruit fly monitor for the State of California, and librarian for one of the largest jails in the country. Through Sleep With Me, Drew has dedicated himself to help those who feel alone in the deep dark night and just need someone to tell them a bedtime story - Sleep With Me Website</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dr. George Dragoi is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven. He obtained his M.D. degree from the Grigore Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Romania, his Ph.D. degree in Behavioral and Neural Science from Rutgers University, and completed his postdoctoral studies at the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at MIT. Dr. Dragoi studies how sleep shapes memory using brain electrophysiology and computational analysis. Using advanced methods to look at how brain cells work together, he recently found that the brain might have a special way of organizing information, which could help us understand certain diseases better. His current work involves looking at how brain cells in animals form functional connections and learn from past experiences. By understanding these processes better, Dr. Dragoi hopes to uncover new insights into how the brain works and find treatments for neurological conditions.</image:caption>
